‘Creative’ modularity
In this research a method is applied that combines modularity principles and parametric design. The method transverses scales, starting from the generative scale of the discrete components of the units, using WASP and Rabbit in Grasshopper, to the design development of the timber components of the units.
This master’s thesis is an exploration of redeveloping the Blikfabriek. The Blikfabriek is an industrial site located in Hoboken, Antwerp. A part of the site is currently neglected and abandoned. By exploring adaptive reuse and regeneration principles, this research aims to address the issues of neglect that currently affect the site and integrating it within the urban fabric.
The focus of my individual research is centred around the ‘creative area’ of the site. This research aims to create opportunities for small-scale maker and young designers. The initiative is inspired by the existing Maakfabriek on site, a collective that shares their workspace and equipment for financial reasons. Makers who previously lacked the resources to afford their own space and equipment now have access to both. As a collective, they could benefit from exchanging knowledge and expertise, which is a significant asset. Therefore, my objective is to expand this concept and establish a platform that would be inaccessible to young, small-scale makers otherwise. This approach not only nurtures creative talent in a secure environment but also strengthens the community as each new talent contributes to the collective.
